Geeks Rule is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based out of New York City focused on promoting the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) among underserved youth. As you'll see below, we've developed solutions to tackle some of the largest challenges facing the education of our country's youth.
The United States has become a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers and innovators. Yet today, that position is threatened as comparatively few American students pursue expertise in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)—and by an inadequate pipeline of teachers skilled in those subjects. President Obama has set a priority of increasing the number of students and teachers who are proficient in these vital fields. Based on the projected job figures below, the next decade will provide outsized opportunities in STEM-related jobs. It's our duty to ensure our country's youth are fully aware of and prepared for these careers.
Only 16 percent of American high school seniors are proficient in mathematics and interested in a STEM career. Even among those who do go on to pursue a college major in the STEM fields, only about half choose to work in a related career. The United States is falling behind internationally, ranking 25th in mathematics and 17th in science among industrialized nations. In our competitive global economy, this situation is unacceptable.
Geeks Rule has developed a comprehensive 3-step solution to tackle the challenges outlined above. We begin by creating Awareness through our Speaker Series program, followed by providing Exposure through our Geek-for-a-Day program, and finally offer long-term Support through our Mentor Program. Each of our programs are detailed below.
The Geeks Rule Speaker Series is at the core of our solution, and is the first step of tackling the challenges facing the education of our country's youth. Through the Speaker Series program, Geeks Rule taps its vast network of STEM professionals and brings these accomplished individuals to speak to and interact with students in a classroom or auditorium setting. By putting students in direct contact with accomplished STEM professionals, Geeks Rule aims to create broad Awareness of the importance of STEM and the opportunities it affords to those who pursue it.

The second step in the Geeks Rule solution, Geek-for-a-Day is a one-day externship program where we match students with STEM professionals for a one-on-one inside look at the professional's job. Students visit the professional's office and shadow day-to-day activities, ask questions, and gain Exposure to what a day in the life of a STEM professional is really like.
Are you a student interested in Geek-for-a-Day? Due to high demand and limited spots, we require a brief application for our Geek-for-a-Day program. Click the button below to apply.
The third and final step in the Geeks Rule Solution, the Geeks Rule Mentor Program pairs students with long-term STEM mentors to help guide students through career decisions, college applications, internship selection, answer questions, and so much more. Think of it like a Big Brother Big Sister program, where mentors provide ongoing Support for students interested in STEM. Mentors and students typically meet monthly or quarterly (depending on their individual schedules) to ensure students have the necessary resources to succeed.
For those interested in our Mentor Program, we suggest first applying for our Geek-for-a-Day program (above). We find that many of our Mentor Program candidates met their mentors through our Geek-for-a-Day program.
